Dear DLSA Members:
As I write this letter, snow is falling along the lakeshore and the wind is stirring it up pretty
well. Ice covers close to 100 yards of the big lake, and the temperature this morning was 8
degrees. It is winter!! And it is also time to send you another DLSA Newsletter. By the time it
reaches you, we’ll definitely be thinking spring!
Your DLSA Board has had another active year. The Dennison/McClendon property, Lake
Michigan water levels, the International Upper Great Lakes Study, and concerns with rental
properties have been on nearly every Board agenda and we have also been following Lake
Kalamazoo dredging and the Presbyterian Camp situations. For those of you who winter
elsewhere, be sure to catch up on these items via the paragraphs that follow. Thanks to David
Swan, President of the Saugatuck Dunes Coastal Alliance, for the McClendon property article
and to various Board members for the other contributions.
We have also begun to plan the 2011 Summer Social and Annual Meeting. The Social is
scheduled for July 23 at the SaugatukYacht Club. Be sure to mark your calendar and plan to
join us for a fun (and tasty) evening. Check out the web site pictures
(www.douglaslakeshoreassociation.com and click on “summer social galleries”) to see what a
good time our members have had the past couple of years. For the Annual meeting we will
return to a Saturday morning format on August 6 so mark that date also.
Speaking of the website, be sure to check it out. Board member Jay Hernly has put a lot of time
into making the site one that is useful and informative. Many of you paid your 2010 dues via
the web and we encourage even more of you to do so this year. Incidentally, if you come to a
section of the web site that requires a password, it is Douglas77, and this password is case
sensitive.
At last year’s Annual Meeting, there was discussion about fireworks on our beaches, especially
those that occur late in the evening. It was agreed that late night fireworks are not enjoyed by
all, and in the city of Douglas they are prohibited between 11 pm and 7 am. The local
ordinance also states that “ before any person...shall conduct a fireworks display which
involves individual fireworks of more than 2 grains of pyrotechnic composition, a written
request must be directed to the City Police Chief and the Fire Chief for a permit...”. If
someone is disturbing your peaceful evening with fireworks, you should feel free to call the
Douglas Police Department. They responded to such calls last summer and are prepared to do
so in the future. It would also be appreciated if those of you renting your houses informed
renters that late night fireworks are not appropriate.
In closing, I want to remind you that your board is committed to maintaining the quality of life
we enjoy in the lakeshore area, and we encourage you to let us know if there is anything that
we can do to enhance that quality of life even further.
