Board Meeting Minutes
June 4, 2011
Present: SheldonWettack, Al Lyon, Mary Kay Baker, Pat Woods, Steve McKown, John Blair, Joe Milauckus, Arlene Philp, Jay Hernly, Vince Beckman
Excused: Mike Flynn, Dennis Dreyer
Sheldon called the meeting to order at 9:18 a.m. and thanked Steve McKown for hosting the meeting.
The minutes from April 16, 2011 were approved as distributed.
1. Treasurer’s Report. Arlene presented the Treasurer’s Report which was approved unanimously as presented.
- The current balance is $6,682.32 with an additional $2,500 in dues outstanding.
- There is some confusion amongst the members who paid by PayPal, questioning if they had paid. Some members have paid twice.
- Suggested that an email and a letter be sent to those who haven’t paid their dues requesting payment.
- Mail the Directory as we have it, even including members that have not paid this year.
- Next winter when the dues notice goes out, there will be a note stating that each family who is listed in the Directory will need to pay dues. (Some families have multiple listings under one family name.)
Membership Survey. Al, Dennis & Arlene.
- Al will work on a survey and sent it to the committee to work out. It will be sent by email to the membership once approved by the Board.
- The survey might include:
- questions about rental properties
- fire inspection fees
- renting your cottage for more than 15 days – this allows the city to not allow a person to claim the home as their principal residence.
- items they would like to read about in the newsletter
- questions about the Summer Social – should it be a cocktail party? Dinner? When/if it should be held?
New Business
Summer Social. Pat, Jay, Al, John, Mike and Vince.
- July 23 at the Saugatuck Yacht Club
- Motion to charge $20 per person with children under 12 eating for free was passed unanimously.
- After a lengthy discussion, there will still be an auction this year. The charity will be the Rootbeer Barrel Project.
- Sheldon will invite the Lake Michigan Shore Association Board members to attend.
- Pat will need help from the Board members with setup and take down.
- Discussed changing the format – perhaps to a cocktail party – for 2012.
- August 6 at Douglas City Hall
- The committee will ask Patty Birkholtz to come and discuss invasive species, lake levels, etc.
- Other suggested topics included a report from the Harbor Committee and on the consolidation of the three governments.
Terms are expiring for Al, Sheldon, Vince and Mary Kay. John will be going off the Board.
Directory. Jay and Arlene.
The Directory will be sent as is. Jay will order it to be printed and Mary Kay will stuff and mail the envelopes.
R2 Zoning for Timeshares. Arlene.
A home on the lakeshore was approached about becoming a timeshare. Is there a distinction between fractional ownership and timesharing? Arlene has sent an email to Douglas and is waiting to hear back. She will give an update at our next meeting.
Saugatuck Dunes Coastal Alliance. Sheldon.
Nothing new to report.
Saugatuck Township Planning Commission. Joe.
They have not met since March. The wind energy ordinance is ready to be finalized.
Saugatuck Harbor Committee. Joe.
- The township is still part of the committee.
- David Hingle will be replaced since he resigned.
- Committee has put together a preliminary plan, which in general proposes to have two dredged areas.
- How much dredging would be influenced by the soil tests and what they find.
- No money has been found to help pay for the dredging.
- There is a presentation at the Douglas City Hall at 10 a.m on June 18. The Study Director will be here to brief us on the final report recommendations on the St. Clair River issues.
- The public is invited and Jay will send an email notice to the DLSA membership.
- Pat has been in touch with Becky Reininger about water problems that some fear could collapse the road.
- New areas of Lakeshore Drive will be included in the Warnock Drain.
- Pat will give information about this issue and the properties involved to Sheldon and Steve who will write a letter to the Douglas City Council. The letter is intended to ask Douglas to be sure to address current water issues before more building is done in the city.
Next Meeting. There will be no meeting in July and a brief meeting will be held after the Annual Meeting to elect Board Officers. The next full Board meeting will be held in late August or September.
